The Journal

Journal Keeping for the Creative Writer

Creating an Atmosphere

This journal is the same idea as the emotions journal (see previous issue), but in this journal you’ll be giving descriptive entries about things that you see.

Is there a particularly strange looking house across the street from you?  Why not take your journal over to the front window and write an entry describing this house in full detail?  The colours, the shapes, the way looking at the house makes you feel.

Title your entry: “Strange Eerie House Across the Street,” and if you’re ever writing a story and are trying to describe a strange, eerie house, you can just go back to this entry in your journal for inspiration.

Make entries in this journal on any sort of prop or setting you like:  The park in your neighborhood, your friend’s basement, the sunset at the beach, the old ugly chair at your grandparent’s house – you get the idea.

You could also use this type of journal to create your own settings.  Create whole houses using your imagination, right down to the fabric of the carpet.

Go as far as creating a whole town or city, right down to the map.  Think of the possibilities – give your writing a space.
