Drammen Grunalf


Born: 1958, Portland, Ore.

Traveled as a child, never anywhere too long

States resided in: OR, IA, NJ, WA, UT. Now living in Utah - Give me a small city, and I’ll show you where the fun is.

Enlisted: 1976, Served for 20 years in US Navy, and traveled all over the world. Only Continents not traveled to were Australia, and Antarctica. Served on four ships and two shore stations.

Most challenging Sea Duty: USS Cape Cod AD-43, a Destroyer tender out of San Diego. Assisted in the recovery of the USS Stark, which was fired upon by Iraqi Mirage F-1's. Many sailors were killed, and it took three days to extinguish the fires. Sailed the Pacific for five years on board the Cod. That was my third ship, and I never had a leadership position until then.

Most challenging Shore Duty: NOSC Naval Ocean Systems Center. Provided support for Seal Team 2 out of NAB Coronado. Supported research and development of optical surveillance systems for the submarine fleet. Supported ALL submarine Arctic operations for the U.S. Navy, and NATO. Traveled to the North Pole, and supported extensive testing of submarine and surface ASW R&D planning.

Most beneficial Sea Duty: USS Cape Cod again, I became interested in education. Took several Gen Ed college courses while deployed on Western Pacific cruises. Acquired my enlisted surface warfare pin, and became involved in counter terrorist operations, and led a shipboard swat team.

Most beneficial Shore Duty: TRF Bangor, WA. Trident Refit Facility. This is where I received most of my technical training in metrology and optics.

Education: Working toward a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Hobby’s: Military Science, History, Writing, Model Rockets, HAM Radio, politics.

Favorite Genre’s: Science Fiction Fantasy, Science Fiction, Military Thrillers / Suspense, and just creative writing overall.
